About a year ago, Heather and I purchased Tibetan (actually Nepalese) singing bowls from Zanzibar in Sacramento, CA. We were fairly impressed with the store as a whole — the owner came by and told us everything we ever wanted to know about signing bowls, taught us how to make them sing and was very helpful. The visit was strangely similar to the scene in first Harry Potter film where Harry visits Ollivander’s to find his wand. Zanzibar’s owner, Scott invited us to play all of the singing bowls and to try out a different puja sticks to find the combination that “worked” for us.
We both ended up choosing contemporary bowls over the antique bowls … this decision I think was at the time based mostly on the price difference and the aesthetic appeal of the overtly ornate contemporary bowls to the almost ordinary appearance of the antique bowls. We have had the bowls for almost a year now and have been very happy with them, they’re a great conversation piece and fun to share with friends and family when we have guests.
